Clinical Expertise & Research

  • Real live international rescue centre.
  • Leaders in providing medical care to those at sea.
  • All calls are examined and analysed as these are crucial in our research to redefine medical procedures.

The maritime medicine team in Aberdeen who provide the service excel in this qualification. Their breadth and depth of specialised medical knowledge in the field of maritime medicine is unrivalled and this committed team of doctors use their research experience to examine and introduce improvements to existing services, ensuring that they will always be leaders in providing medical care to those at sea.

The link between medical excellence and the sea are long established. Medicine has been taught as a science in Aberdeen for over 500 years and marine activity has been shown to exist since the first century AD.

This is a real live international rescue centre. The doctors not only give medical advice, support and assistance to those in difficulty around the world but are also on duty in the largest Accident and Emergency service in the UK. Often going out to the North Atlantic or North Sea in storm conditions, winched down under helicopters in the middle of the night to rescue and save the lives of those who have fallen ill or been injured and accompanying patients in helicopter rescue flights. As a result they have a deep and personal understanding of the sea.

All calls to TheFirstCall are examined and analysed by a senior medical research team. This knowledge is crucial in our research to redefine medical procedures as part of evidence based pre-hospital medicine. Our doctors also carry out continuous research to ensure our medical supplies contain the most up to date and appropriate medicines. See published researched papers below.
