Medicine has been taught in Aberdeen for over 500 years. The Regis Chair of Medicine of the University Medical School was endowed in 1497 by King James IV of Scotland and is the first chair of medicine to be established in the world. The Faculty is staffed by over 300 professors and senior consultants, 2,250 doctors and 4,000 nurses and supports over 800 medical students.
The acute hospital complex provides a complete range of medical and clinical specialties and employs over 7,000 people. Over 300 medical scientists work in a £60 million Institute of Medical Research, which includes ‘state of the art’ investigative and diagnostic equipment, and 5 Nobel prizes have been awarded to researchers in Aberdeen. Medical scientists here have led such internationally significant medical discoveries like insulin and the endorphins streptococcus bacterium, the invention of Magnetic Resonance Imaging. It is, one of the very few places in the world where clinical practice, teaching and research occur on the same site – creating a world-leading centre of excellence.
